(Fowl Line) Damage control...Paterno family releases purported final words from Joe Pa on PSU/Sandusky scandal, whereupon he wraps in himself in the alma mater and ignores the heart of the matter (expected), but at the end of the missive he acknowledges the realization containing the mess failed and he tries to salvage the last best compromise, (unexpected),
Or in his words:
"...Whatever failings that may have happened at Penn State, whatever conclusions about my or others' conduct you may wish to draw from a fair view of the allegations, it is inarguable that these actions had nothing to do with this last team or any of the hundreds of prior graduates of the “Grand Experiment.”..."
You hate to kick a guy when he's down, even more so when he's six-feet under. This was an apocryphally crappy way for Paterno to step off. No matter what Freeh concludes the stench of Sandusky forever pollutes Paterno's legacy.
I don't and never will buy Paterno's weak tea explanation, my own visceral reaction to pedophiles is par for the course for most people ranging from extreme revulsion to a deep-seated and sincere homicidal urge to drop them dead in a ditch. If I was Paterno and somebody said so and so was teabagging a kid in the showers, that guy would be lucky to live thirty-seconds past my ever seeing him again.
Take a Knee
Paterno and his PSU cronies got away with covering this up when they first knew about Sandusky and forced him out in 1999 because of it, because there wasn't a voracious 24/7/365 cable news carnivore thriving on scandal. Joe should have given serious consideration to retiring then because waiting made his fate far worse. Instead of plausible deniability he got waffled. Bam! Splat! Done!
Like a lot of sports legends who overstay their welcome, when his time was up, things got cruel fast and then he was gone. Almost any other, no scratch that, any other scandal, cheating, gambling, drugs, you name it, Paterno comes out smelling like a rose. Now his name is synonymous with something you scrape off your shoe because he stuck by a monster.
RIP Joe Pa
